DA-PCC at DMMMSU engages Elyu students in ‘carapreneurship’

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on people in all walks of life. Students are not exempted and in fact are faced with some of the most challenging circumstances during lockdown. But while they are shut off from the outside for safety, their extra time post fulfillment of learning module requirements can be used for other worthy pursuits.

The DA-PCC at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DA-PCC at DMMMSU) and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) saw this as an opportunity to introduce the youth in Naguilian, La Union to an agri-entrepreneurship program.

Initially, six high school students from Cabaritan Sur were chosen to receive one buffalo each for fattening last November 25.

Said program aims to encourage the Filipino youth to engage in agriculture, address the ageing population of Filipino farmers, and guarantee a strong labor force for the agri-fishery sector.

Majority of the student-beneficiaries belong to poor farming families. The program aims to train the students on basic buffalo management and are expected to eventually engage in dairy buffalo production as a source of additional income.

“The purpose of the program is to nurture our youth economically and socially and to inculcate in their young mind the value of being a farmer. Hopefully, this initial venture into buffalo raising would encourage them to fully engage in the business,” DA-PCC at DMMMSU OIC-Center Director Vilma Gagni said.

Carlo Jowan Aspiras Jr., an AI technician of the DA-PCC at DMMMSU in the area and Freddie Ledda, a successful buffalo raiser in the said town, will serve as the mentors of the recipients.
