DSWD, DA-PCC at MMSU partner for milk feeding program

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office I partnered with the DA-Philippine Carabao Center at Mariano Marcos State University (DA-PCC at MMSU) for the implementation of a PHP3.1 million milk feeding program in the provinces of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

Around 1,300 target preschoolers will benefit from this program that will run for 120 feeding days, with each beneficiary to receive a 180-ml fresh milk daily.

This program is in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

This program also supports Republic Act No. 11037 otherwise known as the “Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act”. The purpose of this act is collectively pursued by the Department of Agriculture, the National Dairy Authority, the Philippine Carabao Center, and the Cooperative Development Authority.

Fresh buffalo’s milk and milk-based food products are included in the fortified meals and cycle menu of target schoolchildren as stipulated in R.A. No. 8976 or the “Philippine Food Fortification Act of 2000”.

The DA-PCC sees the milk feeding program as a sustainable market and an opportunity for the farmers’ cooperatives to increase their production and income.
