International Livestock Biotechnology Symposium, ginanap sa Iloilo City Ito ay may temang “Demand-driven Innovation for Resilient Philippine Livestock Industry’’ at pinangunahan ng Department of Agriculture- Livestock Biotechnology Center (DA-LBC) sa pakikipagtulungan sa Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) sa West Visayas State University, University of San Agustin, at Department of Science and Technology - National Research Council of the Philippines Division XIII. Ayon kay Dr. Claro Mingala, hepe ng DA-LBC, ang mga inisyatiba sa research and development ay makatutulong sa pagkakaroon ng sapat na pagkain sa kabila ng lumalaking pangangailangan ng mundo. “Sa loob ng ilang taon, nakita natin ang pagpapahalagang ibinigay ng DA sa biotechnology bilang isang instrumento ng agrikultura na may malaking potensiyal na magbigay ng mga produkto at mga teknolohiya na makapagpapataas ng pagiging produktibo at kita sa nasabing industriya, ”ani Dr. Arnel Del Barrio, PCC executive director, sa kaniyang mensahe. Ang mga larangan na pinagtuunan ng pansin ay agricultural biotechnology program, livestock production, animal breeding, antimicrobial resistance, at food-borne pathogens. Ang mga tagapagsalita na naimbitahan sa symposium ay mula sa Japan, Thailand, USA at Pilipinas. Kabilang dito sina Marie Joy Olo-Jumalon, DA-Biotechnology Program; Yoko Kato, Kindai University, Japan; Dr. Gemerlyn Garcia, Central Luzon State University; Dr. Chie Nakajima, Hokkaido University, Japan; Dr. Gerard Dumancas; at Dr. Alona Badua, Central Luzon State University. Samantala, ayon kay DA-Biotechnology Program Project Management Officer Olo-Jumalon, para maparami pa ang bilang ng mga siyentipiko at eksperto sa larangan ng agri-biotech sa Pilipinas, sila’y namamahagi ng scholarship sa Central Luzon State University, University of Southern Mindanao, Visayas State University, University of the Philippines Visayas, at University of the Philippines Los Baños. Aabot sa 64 ang kanilang napagkalooban ng scholarships simula 2014. Higit 100 katao na kinabibilangan ng mga mananaliksik, siyentipiko at eksperto sa loob at labas ng bansa ang dumating sa nasabing symposium.
