“Bakenotan”: An advocacy hub featuring carabao’s milk is now open

Bakenotan, a bakery shop that features locally produced carabao’s milk and honey as main ingredients, is now open in Bacnotan, La Union.

More than just a pastry shop, Bakenotan is an advocacy hub that provides a source of income for the community, assisting in the fight against malnutrition and maintaining Zero Hunger in Bacnotan. It is one of the community-based livelihood projects selected for the Walang Gutom Awards Project in the municipality, which aims to improve food security and local economic development.

"We are reaping now what we sowed," Mayor Fontanilla said in her speech, recalling their journey in winning PHP2 million in the Walang Gutom Awards in 2024.

She emphasized that the 6M Model, which includes Magpakain, Magpakalusog, Magtanim, Magconnect, Magtulungan, and Magtrabaho, is the key factor that distinguishes them as the national winner of the award. She further explained that Vice Mayor Francisco Angelito Fontanilla added the sixth M, "Magtrabaho," emphasizing his battle cry of "a job in every home."

According to John Philip Gabriel, municipal nutrition action officer and walang gutom awards focal person, the bakery enterprise will use buffalo milk and honey as its primary ingredients in its pastries.

DA-PCC at DMMMSU representative Maximo Peralta Jr. emphasized the nutritional benefits of using buffalo milk.

"The buffalo milk contains 58% more calcium, 40% more protein, and 43% less cholesterol than other milks," he said. He also mentioned the center's commitment to buffalo breeding in the municipality, which will be carried out by village-based AI technicians as well as technical buffalo production and management training.

Gisma Gaudia, president of the Yummy Tubs Bakers Sustainable Livelihood Program Association, expressed the association's dedication to managing the bakery.

The Bakenotan bakery enterprise will be managed by two Sustainable Livelihood Program Associations (SLPAs): the Yummy Tubs Bakers SLPA, under the Walang Gutom awards, and the Gandalicious SLPA, funded by Senator Pia and Allan Peter Cayetano, which has a total of 50 members.

A ceremonial milk toast was held to officially open the business for the public, followed by attendees enjoying members' baked goods such as honey squash with caramilk cupcake, honey mushroom cookies, brownies with caramilk, and milky bun.

The LGU-Bacnotan, spearheaded by Mayor Divine Fontanilla and Vice Mayor Francisco Fontanilla, and representatives from various national government agencies, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of its bakery enterprise, at the Kusina ng Kalinga, Agtipal, Bacnotan, La Union, last July 4.
