Cecilia Irang & Marijoan Nefulda Lumahok ang mga magsasaka at mga livestock raisers sa iba’t ibang bayan sa Ilocos Norte sa isang technology demonstration (techno-demo) na “Enhancing Feeding Management Practices of Ruminant Raisers: A Urea-Molasses Treated Rice Straw (UMTRS) Demonstration and Technology Showcase” noong Enero 30, 2020 sa Marcos, Ilocos Norte. Techno-demo sa paghahanda ng Urea-Molasses Treated Rice Straw isinagawa sa Ilocos Norte Bahagi ang techno-demo ng proyektong “Development of Sustainable Rice Straw Management Practices and Technologies for Ruminant Fodder in the Philippines (RiceStraw PH)”, isang kolaborasyon sa pagitan ng DA-PCC, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), at DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice). Ang nasabing proyekto ay pinangunahan ni PCC Executive Director Dr. Arnel Del Barrio at pinondohan ng DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR). Ang mga magsasakang kalahok ay galing sa mga bayan ng Marcos, Currimao, Dingras, Solsona, Nueva Era, Banna at Pinili, at Laoag. Ilan sa mga posibleng dahilan kung bakit madalas na sinusunog lang ang dayami pagkatapos ng anihan ay dahil sa mahirap itong kolektahin, nakasanayan na sa mahabang panahon, o kakulangan sa kaalaman ng mga magsasaka kung paano mapakikinabangan ang dayami. Sa proyektong ito ay binigyang-diin hindi lamang ang pang ekonomiyang pakinabang ng paggamit ng dayami kundi pati ang positibong dulot nito sa kapaligiran kung hindi ito susunugin. Nagbigay ng pangkalahatang-ideya si Dr. Daniel Aquino, center director ng PCC sa Central Luzon State University (PCC@CLSU) at study leader, ukol sa proyekto at tinalakay ang kahalagahan ng dayami bilang pakain sa mga hayop. Sinabi rin niya ang mga materyales na kakailanganin at ang mga hakbang para sa mabisang paghahanda at paggamit ng UMTRS. Ang mga sumusunod ay ang mga materyales na kakailanganin para sa mixture ng paggawa ng 100 kg na UMTRS: 4.40 kg urea, 4 kg molasses, at 91.6 kg na tubig. Ilubog ang dayami (mas mainam kung ito ay natadtad) sa mixture. Hanguin at ilagay sa drum o silage bag. Kailangan masiguro na siksik ito bago takpan o sarahan nang mabuti. Maaaring ipakain ang UMTRS nang direkta sa mga hayop 30 araw pagkatapos ng pagbuburo (ensiling). Magreresulta ito ng mas mataas na produksyon ng gatas, mas magandang timbang at karagdagang sustansiya sa mga hayop. Sa patnubay ng mga kawani ng PCC, hinati sa dalawang grupo ang mga kalahok para sa paghahanda ng UMTRS bilang bahagi ng kanilang hands-on activity. Pagkatapos ay tinuruan sila ng tamang paraan ng pagbuburo at pagsasara ng mga silage bags. Tinuruan din sila kung paano mag-imbak ng dayami sa pamamagitan ng baler machine o ng improvised stationary wooden baler. Itinuro rin kung paano gamitin ang UMTRS bilang sangkap sa Total Mixed Ration (TMR). Ang paggamit ng teknolohiyang ito sa pakain ay mapakikinabangan ng mga kooperatiba, magsasaka, agricultural entrepreneurs, livestock producers at extension workers, dahil matitiyak nito ang karagdagang kita at mapagkukunan ng pakain para sa mga alagang hayop.
