Mar 2018 Karbaw Bulgarian Murrah Buffalo, Stan, alam nyo ba By Chrissalyn Marcelo Ang pinakamatandang bulugang kalabaw ngayon na may nalahiang maraming anak at kasalukuyang inaalagaan ng Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) ay ang kalabaw na si Stan. Si Stan ay isang Bulgarian Murrah Buffalo na sa Pilipinas ipinanganak (island-born) noong Oktubre 22, 2001. Stan, Bulgarian Murrah Buffalo Kasalukuyan siyang semen donor sa PCC National Bull Farm sa Digdig, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija. Siya ay kinukunan ng semilya dalawang beses sa isang linggo para sa national artificial insemination (AI) program ng PCC. Mula nang mapiling semen donor noong Setyembre 9, 2003, nasa 39 na ang naging anak ni Stan, ayon kay Dr. Ester B. Flores, genetic improvement program coordinator at head ng Animal Breeding and Genomics Section (ABGS) ng PCC. Ayon pa sa kanya, ang nanay ni Stan ay si 2GP97103 (island born na rin sa Pilipinas) at ang ama naman nito ay si Mapel (Murrah buffalo) na kinukunan ng PCC ng semilya noong 1995 mula sa bansang Bulgaria at dinala sa Pilipinas upang gamitin sa pagpapalahi. Mataas ang lahi ng kalabaw na ito, ayon pa kay Dr. Flores. Ang produksiyon ng gatas ng nanay ni Stan ay umabot sa 2,382.6 kg sa loob ng 305 araw na lactation period o katumbas ng halos walong litro ng gatas na nakukuha kada araw. Mula sa produksiyon na ito at sa ganda ng lahi ni Stan ay siguradong mataas ang lahi ng magiging anak niya. Dahil mataas ang lahi ng kalabaw na si Stan ay napili ring maging semen donor ng PCC ang isa sa mga naging anak niya. Ang anak niyang ito ay si Jason na ipinanganak noong Pebrero 15, 2007 at naging semen donor sa PCC National Bull Farm mula noong Pebrero 13, 2009. Sa kasalukuyan ay 39 na rin ang anak ni Jason katulad ng kanyang amang si Stan. Ang naitalang produksiyon ng gatas ng ina nito ay 3,038.8 kg sa loob ng 305 na araw samantalang ang mga naging anak naman niya ay nasa 2,382.6 kg sa loob ng 305 na araw. Ang mga napipiling semen donor ng PCC katulad ni Stan at Jason ay ang top 2% ng pinakamagagaling na bulugang kalabaw sa bansa. Sa pamamagitan ng selection and breeding na ginagawa ng PCC sa pamamagitan ng ABGS nito ay tiyak ang pagdami at pagkakaroon ng populasyon ng magagandang lahi ng kalabaw sa bansa. Bunsod ng kanilang mahalagang kontribusyon, nagkakaroon ng mga kalabaw na mas malalaki at mas marami ang produksiyon ng gatas na tuwirang nakatutulong upang mapataas ang lokal na produksiyon ng gatas at karne sa bansa at pagtaas ng kita ng mga magsasaka.
