Sapagka’t ang hindi tamang pagkakakilanlan ay makapagdudulot ng maling estimated breeding value (EBV) ng isang hayop. Melinda Reyes, PCC Animal Breeding and Genomics Section (ABGS) Kaugnay nito, isinagawa ang pag-aaral na “Microsatellite-Based Parentage Verification of Cattle and Buffalo Breeds in the Philippines”. Ito ay sinaliksik nina Melinda Reyes, Noriel Esteban, at Dr. Ester Flores ng PCC Animal Breeding and Genomics Section (ABGS). Ang pag-aaral ay nakatuon sa pagpili ng microsatellite markers (MS) na magagamit sa pag-alam at pagtiyak ng magulang ng mga nasabing hayop. Ang MS ay DNA markers na ginagamit internationally sa pagtiyak sa kung sino ang mga magulang ng isang hayop. Binigyan-diin ni Melinda Reyes, isa sa mga mananaliksik, na ang locally developed parentage verification kit ay pwedeng gamitin sa kalabaw at baka upang madetermina kung tama ang naiulat o naitala na magulang nito. Ang naturang kit ay binubuo ng 15 MS markers na ginagamit sa two-stage process. Sa unang stage ay gumagamit ng 12 MS markers. Kung walang problema o ‘di pagkapareho ng mga datos sa resulta at kung tama ang nakatalang magulang, hindi na kinakailangan pang isagawa ang ikalawang stage. Sa ikalawang stage naman ginagamit ang huling 3 MS markers upang masiguro na tama ang naitalang magulang. Sa ganitong paraan, napabababa ang halagang babayaran lalo’t tumataas ang bayad habang tumataas rin ang dami ng MS marker na ginamit. “Sinubukan namin sa mga magkakapamilyang hayop at sa hindi para makita kung epektibo,” ani Dr. Ester Flores, hepe ng ABGS. Sa iba’t ibang PCC herds at ilang cattle farms nagmula ang mga hayop na kasali sa pag-aaral. May kabuuang apat na lahi ng kalabaw at anim na lahi ng baka ang ginamit. Ayon kay Reyes, nais nila sa hinaharap na magawang i-commercialize ang nasabing kit na maaaring gamitin sa mga industriya ng kalabaw at baka.
