Cecilia Irang & Mary Antonette Andarza DA-PCC sa WVSU — Itinuro ng DA-PCC sa West Visayas State University (DA-PCC sa WVSU) ang paraan ng pagbuburo ng mais at ang hatid na benepisyo nito sa mga magsasaka sa isang pagsasanay na ginanap noong Pebrero 9 sa Sipag Villar Training Center, Brgy. San Jose, San Miguel, Iloilo. Silage (Larawang kuha ng DA-Philippine Carabao Center) Lumahok ang mga kooperatiba ng magsasaka mula sa Leon, Iloilo (Leon ConFed Farmers’ Dairy Association), Hamtic, Antique (Hamtic Multi-Purpose Cooperative), Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo (Barotac Nuevo Multi-Purpose Cooperative), at Province of Guimaras sa pagsasanay na pinamagatang “Demonstration of Corn Silage as Feed Resource for Carabao-Kanding-Baka”. Binigyang-diin ni Dr. Myrtel Alcazar, Genetic Improvement Program Coordinator ng DA-PCC sa WVSU, ang benepisyo at pakinabang ng pagbuburo ng mais kapag gagamitin itong pakain sa mga hayop, lalo na sa kalabaw. Ipinakita ni Perlito Echeche, chairman ng LECOFADA, kasama ang ilang mga miyembro nito, ang wastong paghahanda ng burong damo. Nagpasalamat naman si DA-PCC sa WVSU Director Arn Granada sa Villar Sipag para sa oportunidad na makapagdaos ng pagsasanay sa training center nito, lalo na sa panahon ngayon na limitado lang ang pagpupulong at pagsasagawa ng ganitong mga gawain. Samantala, sa isang pre-recorded video message ipinarating ni Senator Cynthia Villar ang kaniyang paghanga sa DA-PCC sa WVSU sa pagsasagawa ng ganitong inisyatiba na, aniya, ay positibong hakbang tungo sa pagpapalago ng lokal na produksyon ng gatas, na makatutulong sa nutrisyon ng mga bata at magpapataas din ng kita ng mga maggagatas. “Hiling ko sa Philippine Carabao Center na magsagawa pa kayo ng mga ganitong pagsasanay sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng bansa para suportahan natin ang ating mga magsasaka sa pagpapabuti ng kanilang katayuan,” ani Senator Villar. Inilibot naman ni Michael Mayoga, Villar Sipag staff, ang mga kalahok sa Sipag Villar Training Center, na nagtatampok ng mga proyekto gaya ng masonry, Villar Farm School, at pabrika ng plastik na nagpoproseso ng mga tirang plastik para gawing upuan. Pinasalamatan ni Janice Cuaresma, Carabao-Based Enterprise Development coordinator ng DA-PCC sa WVSU ang lahat ng mga nag-organisa sa pagsasanay at inaasahan niyang marami pang katulad na pagsasanay ang magaganap sa hinaharap. Dumalo rin sa aktibidad sina Isabelo Luscares, chairman ng Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries Iloilo; at Chesa Elenterio, representative mula sa office of Assistant Secretary to the Visayas. Ang burong mais ay isang pakain na pinagmumulan ng mataas na enerhiya para sa mga gatasang kalabaw. Mainam din ito sa dairy farm systems para maiwasan ang kulang at sobrang pagsusuga sa mga hayop at mapabuti ang kalusugan ng mga ito at mapataas ang produksyon ng gatas.
