Ex-soldier finishes valedictorian in FLS-DBP-Albay

 

An army veteran graduated as the class valedictorian among 65 completers of the first batch of Farmer Livestock School on Dairy Buffalo Production (FLS-DBP) in the Province of Albay, on November 4.

Forty-nine-year old Jay Pascua from Camalig ventured into dairy buffalo production after retiring from the Philippine Army with the rank of colonel. He now owns 32 head of dairy carabaos.

Together with Pascua, Domingo Astillero, Jr. and Alvin Losande of Guinobatan and Daraga, respectively, also graduated as valedictorians.

The FLS-DBP in Albay is a partnership project of the Provincial Government of Albay-Albay Veterinary Office (PGA-AVO), Gubat St. Anthony Cooperative (GSAC), DA-Philippine Carabao Center-University of the Philippines Los Baños (DA-PCC at UPLB), LGUs of Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan and Libon, and cities of Ligao and Legazpi.  It was conducted by the AVO led by Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Pancho Mella with Dr. Marlon Tapel and Ms. Catherine Mancera as facilitators.

The undertaking was made possible through the Office of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform headed by Sen. Cynthia Villar.

Vice-Governor Edcel Greco B. Lagman attended the event and made remarks on the importance, potential and future support of the provincial government to dairy buffalo production. Also present in the commencement exercise were Agriculture Center Chief of Albay and Sorsogon Florentino Ubalde, Chairperson of Gubat St. Anthony Cooperative (GSAC) Engr. Rene Hermo, OIC City Veterinarian of Ligao City Dr. Azel Ranada, Municipal Agricultural Officer (MAO) of Daraga Meljie Matociños, MAO of Camalig Dante Alejandro, and MAO representative of Guinobatan Gil Camases.

The training course, originally intended for 34 weeks commenced in March 2020 and took 20 months to finish due to the pandemic.
