Abra students kick off journey in carabao production

Forty-five second-year students from the Mt. Carmel Agri-Tourism and Training Center Inc.'s Diploma in Agricultural Technology program have successfully completed their Supervised Industry Learning (SIL) in Animal Production for Ruminants. The students received their certificates during a closing program held on March 12, 2025, at Bishop Rillera Hall in Monggoc, Pidigan, Abra.

The students, divided into three batches, underwent their SIL from January 24 to February 21, 2025. Their training provided them with hands-on experience in various aspects of the carabao-based enterprise value chain, including farm operations, milk testing, and processing dairy products such as pastillas, yogurt, chocolate milk, and pasteurized milk.

"The SIL is part of the students’ curriculum where they need to undergo a supervised learning activity depending on their chosen program. This allows them to gain industry exposure and apply their knowledge beyond the classroom setting," Alaine Banggad, the school administrator, said.

Mt. Carmel President Engr. Irene Bringas highlighted the significance of this experience in preparing students for future careers in the carabao industry.

“You are fortunate to have this immersion, and I hope you value the lessons you’ve learned in Asingan, as they will be useful in your future endeavors,” Bringas told the students.

Chairperson Rolly Mateo Sr. of the Bantog Samahang Nayon Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BSNMPC), where the students completed their training, encouraged them to retain and apply their learnings.

“Sana ‘yong mga natutunan nila sa farm ay manatili sa kanilang mga isipan at i-apply nila sa kanilang magiging trabaho sa hinaharap,” he said.

Kein Andrew Andres, one of the on-the-job trainees, expressed his heartfelt appreciation on behalf of his co-students to BSNMPC for their kind acceptance and for being their home during their immersion. He also thanked DA-PCC at DMMMSU for partnering with their school, imparting knowledge in the carabao industry, and stationing them at BSNMPC.

Through this, DA-PCC at DMMMSU Center Chief Vilma Gagni inspired them to continue building on their newfound skills, remain passionate, and strive for excellence in contributing to the development of the carabao industry.
