DA-PCC inks partnership with solar firms for energy conservation initiative

The DA-Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC) signed a memorandum of agreement with MAQO Engineering and Solaraze Konstruct Development (SKD) Corporation for the 1.05 MWp Grid-Tie Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Power Project to cut electricity costs and promote sustainable energy.

The agreement was formalized on March 14, 2025, at DA-PCC’s headquarters.

MAQO is a top solar power company in Malaysia that offers clean energy solutions for industrial systems, while the Davao-based SKD Corp. aims to provide customers with high-quality, well-designed, and affordable solar PV systems at competitive prices.

"The agency spends a significant amount on electricity each month, and this cost is likely to rise even more during the summer. With this achievement, we can reduce our energy expenses and embody the resilience of the carabao by adapting to a climate-smart environment," said Dr. Liza Battad, Executive Director III of DA-PCC. She also expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in this initiative.

Dr. Edwin Atabay, OIC deputy executive director, said that this event is significant as the DA-PCC will be the first DA-attached agency to commit to transforming electrical sources to solar energy.

According to the CEO of SKC Corp. Engr. Alexander Arce and his team planned to install solar panels on the agency's rooftops by September.

Engr. Arce will also inspect and evaluate the roof structure and stability, finalize the design and concept for the electrical works, prepare and deliver materials, and finalize the project's timeline and schedule after the MOA signing.

On the other hand, MAQO Managing Director Kong Kok King made positive remarks about partnering with DA-PCC in its effort to go green. "The system is expected to generate approximately 1,500,000 kWh of electricity annually, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 1,200 tons," he explained.

Moreover, Vernon Foo, MAQO business development director, shared: "This is more than just a contract. It is a testament to the DA-PCC's vision to remain ahead of the curve by embracing cutting-edge solutions to strengthen its legacy in Philippine agriculture."

He added, "With the installation of a one-megawatt solar system, the agency will not only reduce its energy cost but will also take a firm step towards a low-carbon energy-resilient future. By harnessing solar energy, you are not only making operations more efficient but also setting a powerful example for institutions nationwide. This initiative shows that even in tradition, there is room for transformation."

Head of Livestock Engineering Section Engr. Cris Guzon felt accomplished as the project was put into motion and he also ensured the safety of the personnel throughout the implementation. He concluded, "As DA-PCC aims to conserve, propagate, and promote the carabao, we, at the Livestock Engineering Section, seek to improve productivity within the agency, and energy has a vital role in our agency's environment by finally using solar energy."
