DA-PCC hosts planning workshop to intensify AI implementation in Cagayan Valley, Cordilleras

The DA-Philippine Carabao Center at Cagayan State University (DA-PCC at CSU) hosted a planning workshop on Artificial Insemination (AI) Program Implementation in Region 02 (Cagayan Valley) and Cordillera Administrative (CAR) on April 30, 2025, at DA Region 02 Multipurpose Cooperative Building, San Gabriel, Tuguegarao City.

Facilitated by the AI unit of the DA-PCC at CSU, the workshop discussed the present status of AI accomplishments, services, and calf drop in Cagayan Valley and CAR and sought to address the prevalent issues and concerns surrounding AI implementation.

DA-PCC at CSU technicians, Local Government Unit (LGU) AI technicians, Village-Based Artificial Insemination Technicians (VBAITs), DA-Regional Field Office 02 (DA-RF02) staff and other industry stakeholders across Region 02 and CAR participated in the planning workshop.

Dr. Robert Busaña, Regional Technical Director (RTD) DA-RF02, welcomed the participants and stressed the importance of the planning workshop, which will impact livestock production and genetic improvement in the region. He also thanked DA-PCC for its consistent efforts in AI implementation, which benefits many farmers.

Mr. Romulo A. Salas, AI coordinator of DA-PCC at CSU, presented the summary of the AI report for the past five years and the key issues and concerns on AI implementation in Region 2 and CAR.

"Based on our record, we have very high AI services but low calf production. We should follow AI protocols to increase our output. Let us do our best to increase the outcome, which is calf production," challenged Mr. Salas.

Benedicto Blanza, Project Development Officer III, provided insights about the new AI protocols for 2025. In light of these, he taught the technicians how to do better in conducting AI services and increasing calf production.

Also, Dr. Edwin C. Atabay, OIC Deputy Executive Director, who serves as the National AI Coordinator of the PCC National Headquarters and Gene Pool, talked about the strategies for accelerating calf production through the Artificial Insemination and Bull Entrustment Program. He discussed the best practices to improve AI efficiency that the technicians could apply in their respective areas. Moreover, he shared his inspiring experiences in conducting AI in the region.

"There are only four main factors that affect the success of AI: carabao, technology, AI technician, and the owner of the carabao. Let us not take shortcuts in doing AI implementation," said Dr. Atabay.

The workshop highlighted the active engagement of technicians and other industry stakeholders present in sharing meaningful insights regarding AI implementation, strengthening collaboration with LGUs, and increasing calf production. Importantly, the target setting and planning are demonstrated through a summary of agreements that have been collaboratively shared. Thus, technicians of Region 2 and CAR became firm in their commitment to improving AI services to produce favorable outcomes.
