DA-PCC at USF entrusts 25 pregnant carabaos to Boholano farmers

The Department of Agriculture–Philippine Carabao Center at Ubay Stock Farm (DA-PCC at USF) officially turned over 25 pregnant carabaos to the Macaban-Kakaw Krayollo and Lubi-Netibo Agriculture Cooperative (MKLAC) on April 29, 2025. This initiative is part of the agency's Carabao Herd Buildup (CHB) Project, which aims to improve dairy stocks and milk production while maximizing the potential of crossbred carabaos for milk, meat, and draft purposes.

The carabaos were entrusted to the cooperative’s two cluster associations—11 carabaos to the Hagbuaya Cluster in Catigbian, Bohol, and 14 carabaos to the Caindang Cluster in Loon, Bohol.

MKLAC Chairperson Jay Bernaldez expressed deep gratitude as they formally accepted the project. She emphasized the shared vision between the cooperative and DA-PCC—building a prosperous and empowered community. Bernaldez shared that the cooperative will adopt a communal dairy farm approach, where responsibilities will be distributed among members. This model, she added, will not only uphold their mission but also preserve product integrity while serving their local communities. The co-op envisions the farm as a center of excellence where knowledge is shared, best practices are applied, and dairy farming thrives, eventually replicating its success across future cluster groups in Bohol.

Rey Balatayo, carabao project coordinator and member of the co-op’s Board of Directors, affirmed their commitment to sustainability. He shared that there is already a ready market for their products such as an outlet in Panglao.

Dr. Maria Dinah Loculan, center director of DA-PCC at USF, gave practical advice on animal care, emphasizing that hard work, consistency, and patience are essential ingredients for success.

Representing the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV), Mr. Romulo Garcia expressed the full support of the Province of Bohol in advancing dairy development. He mentioned several initiatives, including the formation of the Provincial Dairy Council and the allocation of budget and manpower for animal health monitoring, production support, and market development. He also cited the province’s annual PHP10 million allocation for milk feeding programs which are already supporting some dairy cooperatives.

Lastly, Mr. Rommel Raguindin, staff of Senator Cynthia Villar, reiterated the senator’s ongoing support for the program. He noted that Senator Villar has authored several bills and laws addressing milk sufficiency and supporting the sustainability of the country’s dairy sector.

The CHB Project is funded by the office of Senator Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform.
