New army of AI technicians seen to strengthen carabao industry

A new batch of trained Artificial Insemination (AI) technicians is expected to boost the country’s carabao industry following the successful completion of a month-long intensive training program on AI and Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) in large ruminants.

The training, held from April 7 to May 8, 2025, was spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Carabao Center at Central Luzon State University (DA-PCC at CLSU) in partnership with the National Dairy Authority (NDA). The program took place at the DA-PCC National Bull Farm in Brgy. Joson, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.

A total of 14 participants from Pampanga, Tarlac, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Isabela, Benguet, and Nueva Ecija completed the intensive training and were formally recognized as newly certified AI technicians during the graduation ceremony.

Dr. Kenneth Vir Magalong, head of the National Bull Farm, expressed that the event was particularly meaningful as it marked the culmination of the trainees’ one-month journey. He commended their dedication and perseverance, stating that with such commitment, they can achieve their goals. He added that they are truly deserving of the title "AI technicians" and expressed hope that the knowledge and skills they gained will be applied to enhance carabao breeding.

NDA OIC-Department Manager Dr. Leo A. Abaya emphasized the importance of grounding their work in faith. “Let me call you an army—an army with a mission to uplift the carabao industry. But in all your work, put God first. With His grace, your efforts will be fruitful,” he said, also commending the trainers for their dedication.

Dr. Peregrino Duran, head of research and development, emphasized that the recently concluded training was designed to equip participants with essential skills. He congratulated the newly certified AI technicians, expressing that their involvement would contribute significantly to the improvement of the carabao industry.

The awarding of certificates and special citations was led by Regional AI Coordinator Erwin D.C. Encarnacion. Graduates were recognized for their excellence in practical evaluations:

In his closing remarks, DA-PCC OIC-Deputy Executive Director Dr. Edwin Atabay reminded the graduates to embody the agency’s core values, known by the acronym EPICS: Excellence, Professionalism, Integrity, Commitment, and Social and Ecological Responsibility.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic milk toast, signifying the graduates’ commitment to supporting the DA-PCC’s Carabao Development Program.

Also present during the event were Genita Soliva, NDA North Luzon Project Development Officer, and unit heads from DA-PCC, who joined in celebrating the future contributors to the country’s dairy and livestock sector.
