Forty-seven carabao value chain key players from Region XI and Region XII completed the Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) training last July 23 led by DA-Philippine Carabao Center at University of Southern Mindanao in partnership with Department of Trade and Industry- Cotabato Province. The training is part of the efforts of the center to prioritize the quality of milk products produced by the agency and its assisted cooperatives. DA-PCC at USM Director Dr. Geoffray R. Atok said that mishandling of milk not only compromises the quality of the product but the safety of consumers as well. “Bawat patak ng gatas, pera yan. You—our farmers, are entrepreneurs. Not prioritizing food safety affects your status as trusted suppliers and reflects poorly on your cooperative. With this training, we conform to regulatory requirements and build our reputation in the industry,” Director Atok said. DTI Trade Industry Development Specialist Friche Jay Rabaya shared to the participants food safety concerns and issues under Republic Act 10611, the Food Safety Act of 2013, and the Administrative Order 2016-003. Among the other topics that were discussed included food hygiene and sanitation, food safety hazards, and good manufacturing practices. Angelita Claudio, general manager of Tupi Integrated Agricultural Cooperative in Tupi, South Cotabato, said the training not only satisfies the NDA-LTO requirement but also to inculcate among the participants that the quality of every drop of milk they produce should be their top priority. “Bilang bahagi ng school feeding program, mas matitiyak ko na ang gatas na aming ipinapamahagi ay dumaraan sa masusing inspeksyon—mula sa paggagatas sa bukid, pagpoproseso at pag-iimpake, hanggang sa pamamahagi sa mga drop-off points—upang masigurong ligtas at masustansya ito para sa mga bata,” Claudio added. With the continued implementation of Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Filipino Act, carapreneurs are prepared to produce milk products that meet regulatory standards, protect public health, and establish a credible brand for Mindanao’s growing dairy carabao sector.
